We understand that having a vehicle sit unused for over a year can lead to concerns about its registration status. Many donors hesitate to donate a vehicle with expired registration, unsure if they need to renew. The good news? If you have a clean title in your name, an expired registration does not prevent you from donating your car!
At Big Sky Rides, we accept vehicles that may have been parked in your driveway or barn for years. The only essential elements are that the title is in your name and the VIN is clear. The process is straightforward, and we can manage any necessary towing or storage of your vehicle during the donation process.
How to make it happen
Confirm Title Ownership
Ensure the vehicle title is in your name and free of liens. This is the most important requirement for donation eligibility regardless of the vehicle's registration status.
Complete the Donation Form
Fill out our donation form on the Big Sky Rides website with all necessary details about your vehicle, including the VIN and condition. This initiates the donation process.
Surrender or Destroy Plates
While you should surrender your plates to the DMV, you can also simply destroy them. This step is separate from the donation process but is necessary to clear your registration records.
File Release of Liability
To protect yourself from any future liability, make sure to file a release of liability with your local DMV. This formally states that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
Arrange for Towing
Once your donation form is processed, we will coordinate the towing of your vehicle. Big Sky Rides handles all logistics, including any storage needs.
Common gotchas
Neglecting Title Check
Tip: Many donors forget to verify that the title is in their name and without liens. Double-check this before starting the donation process to avoid delays.
Not Filing Release of Liability
Tip: Failing to file the release of liability can leave you open to future liabilities. Ensure this is completed to protect yourself after the donation.
Overthinking Registration
Tip: Donors often worry about renewing registration before donating. Remember, if your title is clean, the registration status doesn't matter for us!
If this path doesn't fit
If donating your vehicle isn’t feasible due to other complications, consider selling it as-is. You could also reach out to local junkyards or buy-back programs to ensure you get some value from your vehicle.
Montana DMV specifics
In Montana, it's essential to surrender your license plates to the DMV when the vehicle registration has lapsed. You’ll also need to file a lien release if applicable. Be aware that different counties might have specific requirements, so checking with your local DMV office can help clarify necessary steps.
